Small bathroom and half bath remodels in San Antonio

Most bathrooms in San Antonio's older neighborhoods are small: a 5 by 8 foot hall bath with every fixture on one wall, or a powder room under the stairs. In a room that size, every inch gets planned. Tell us about the room and a local remodeler calls you back.

Where small bathrooms are

17% of homes in the San Antonio ZIP codes we cover were built before 1960, when a single small bathroom was standard (Census ACS 2020-2024). In 10 city ZIP codes, most homes are that old. ZIP-by-ZIP data.

Ideas that work in a small room

  • Keep the plumbing wall. Leaving every fixture on the same wall saves the most money.
  • Swap the tub for a shower with clear glass, so the room reads larger. Conversions.
  • A wall-mounted or narrow vanity leaves floor showing and makes cleaning easier.
  • Large tile, light grout. Fewer lines make a small floor look bigger.
  • A recessed niche and medicine cabinet between the studs instead of shelves sticking out.
  • A pocket door if the swinging door hits the toilet or vanity.
  • An exhaust fan vented outside. Small rooms trap steam.

What needs a permit

The city's No Permit Required list includes cabinets and countertops. Flooring and tiling are on it too, as are painting and drywall repair. A new vanity and tile on their own can skip the permit; moving a drain or adding a fan circuit cannot. Permit guide.

Questions San Antonio homeowners ask

How much does a half bath remodel cost?

Fixr puts a half bath or powder room at $1,200 to $15,000. A new vanity and toilet with fresh paint sits at the low end; moving fixtures or adding tile walls moves it up.

Can I add a shower to a half bath?

Sometimes, if there is room and a drain can reach it. That is new plumbing with a permit, and the room needs ventilation. Ask the remodeler to look at the space before you plan around it.

What is the smallest a full bathroom can be?

A common minimum is about 5 by 8 feet for a room with a tub. A shower-only bath can fit in a little less. Local code sets clearances around the toilet and in front of fixtures, which the remodeler should check.
