Costs

How much does a bathroom remodel cost in San Antonio?

We don't know of a published San Antonio-only average. National figures put a bathroom remodel at $6,000 to $18,000, about $12,000 on average (Fixr, January 2026). A cosmetic refresh runs $2,400 to $10,000 and a full gut remodel $9,000 to $30,000. What moves a San Antonio price is the same as anywhere: size, whether plumbing moves, the shower you choose, and what turns up behind the old tile.

How much does it cost to remodel a 5x8 bathroom?

A 5 by 8 foot room is the standard hall bath, and most remodels of one land inside the national range of $6,000 to $18,000 (Fixr). Keeping every fixture where it is keeps it toward the low end. Turning the tub into a walk-in shower adds the cost of a new pan and walls: Fixr puts a conversion at $1,200 to $10,000.

What is the most expensive part of a bathroom remodel?

Usually the shower or tub area, because the plumbing and waterproofing all happen there before any tile goes up. Fixr puts a custom tiled walk-in shower at $5,000 to $20,000 on its own. Moving a drain or a toilet is the other big cost, since it means opening the floor.

Is a bathroom remodel worth it?

It depends on why you are doing it. If a tub is a fall risk or a shower leaks, the value is in using the room safely. If you are selling soon, ask a local agent what buyers in your ZIP expect before spending on finishes. The CDC says more than one in four older adults falls each year, and falls send older adults to emergency departments about 4.5 million times a year.

How do people pay for a bathroom remodel?

Cash, a home equity loan or line of credit, a personal loan, or contractor financing. If you finance through the contractor, read the loan terms separately from the remodeling contract. On a homestead, Texas requires a specific warning in the contract itself. Texas Property Code Section 41.007 says a contract to improve a homestead must carry this warning in at least 10-point bold type: "IMPORTANT NOTICE: You and your contractor are responsible for meeting the terms and conditions of this contract. If you sign this contract and you fail to meet the terms and conditions of this contract, you may lose your legal ownership rights in your home. KNOW YOUR RIGHTS AND DUTIES UNDER THE LAW."

Permits and licenses

Do I need a permit to remodel my bathroom in San Antonio?

The City of San Antonio says a building permit is typically required to build or remodel a structure, with a few exceptions for some general repairs. The city's No Permit Required list includes cabinets and countertops. Flooring and tiling are on it too, as are painting and drywall repair. So new tile on its own can skip the permit. Moving a drain or adding a circuit needs one, and that work goes to licensed trades.

Does a bathroom remodeler need a license in Texas?

Texas has no state license for general contractors or remodelers. The state licenses the trades inside the job: plumbers through the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners and electricians through the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. To pull a permit for non-structural remodeling inside San Antonio city limits, a contractor must be registered with the city as a Home Improvement Contractor.

Can I do my own plumbing in San Antonio?

A homeowner does not need a plumbing license to do plumbing in their own homestead (Texas Occupations Code Section 1301.051). A contractor working in your house does. The city still requires a permit for the work; it lets a homeowner apply for specific permits for their own residence.

How do I check a remodeler in San Antonio?

Ask for three numbers: the company's City of San Antonio registration, the plumber's state license and the electrician's state license. The city publishes a list of contractors registered with it, called Contractor Connect. The list keeps contractors whose registration has expired. The city notes that only a valid registration lets a contractor obtain permits. Plumbing licenses are on the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners public license search, and electrical licenses on the TDLR license search.

Showers and tubs

How much does a walk-in shower cost?

Fixr puts a walk-in shower at $5,000 to $11,000, about $8,000 on average. A prefab unit runs $2,000 to $8,000 installed and a custom tiled one $5,000 to $20,000. A curbless shower averages about $6,000 on average.

How much does it cost to convert a tub to a shower?

Fixr puts a tub-to-shower conversion at $1,200 to $10,000, with an average of $4,000. Tile walls push it to $6,000 to $12,000. Removing and hauling the old tub costs around $300, and $200 to $1,000.

Will removing my only bathtub hurt resale value?

There is no rule we can cite for San Antonio. If the house may be sold to a family, ask a local agent whether buyers on your street expect a tub. Keeping the tub in the hall bath while converting the primary bath sidesteps the question.

Is a one-day bath system the same as a remodel?

No. Most one-day systems set acrylic or composite walls and a pan over or in place of the old tub without moving plumbing. That can be a good fit for a sound room with a dated tub. It does not fix a leaking valve, a rotted subfloor or a layout you dislike. Compare a prefab price with a tiled one before you sign.

Who is the best bathroom remodeler in San Antonio?

We don't rank companies. A good fit is one that is registered with the city for work inside city limits, uses a licensed plumber and electrician, pulls the permits the job needs, and gives you an itemized written price and a written contract. Get two prices and compare them line by line.

How long does a bathroom remodel take?

It depends on the scope: a prefab shower swap is a short job, and a gut remodel with new plumbing and inspections takes much longer. Ask the remodeler for a written schedule that shows when each inspection happens and how long you will be without the bathroom.

Can I cancel a remodeling contract in Texas?

Under Texas Business and Commerce Code Section 601.051, you may cancel until midnight of the third business day after you sign. Section 601.002 applies that right to purchases over $25 made through a personal solicitation away from the seller's place of business. That right covers a sale made at your kitchen table. It does not cover a sale negotiated at the seller's showroom or other fixed place of business (Section 601.002).

Should I pay a deposit up front?

Texas has no single rule for remodeling deposits that we can cite. Pay by check or card, never cash, tie later payments to finished stages such as rough plumbing passed or tile done, and hold the final payment until the final inspection passes and the punch list is done.
