The headline number: Published national figures put a bathroom remodel at $6,000 to $18,000, about $12,000 on average (Fixr, January 2026). A cosmetic refresh runs $2,400 to $10,000 and a full gut remodel $9,000 to $30,000. Your price depends mostly on whether plumbing moves and on the shower you choose. Get it in writing.
What moves the price
- Moving plumbing. Keeping the toilet, tub or shower and sink where they are is the biggest single saving. On a slab, moving a drain means cutting concrete.
- The shower. A prefab walk-in shower runs $2,000 to $8,000; a custom tiled one $5,000 to $20,000 (Fixr).
- Tile coverage. Floor only, a tub surround, or floor to ceiling.
- What is behind the wall. In a house built before 1960, plan for surprises such as galvanized supply pipe, a cast iron drain or a rotted subfloor. 17% of the homes in the city ZIP codes we cover are that old.
- Lead-safe work. In a house from before 1978 the remodeler must follow EPA's lead rules, which adds setup and cleanup time. Under EPA's lead renovation rule (RRP), anyone paid to do work that disturbs paint in a home built before 1978 must be certified. That includes plumbers and electricians. Minor work that disturbs 6 square feet or less of paint per room inside is not covered.
- Permits. Plumbing and electrical permits are a small part of the total, but they should be on the quote.
When to book
San Antonio remodeling is steady through the year. City residential repair permits peak in April and are lowest in December (2021-2025 average). A slower month can mean an earlier start date; it does not mean a lower price. Permits by month.

Why do two quotes differ so much?
